University of California Invites Public Comments on UC's Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Policy
On March 2, 2021, the University of California invited the public to comment on proposed revisions to UC’s Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Policy through May 31, 2021.
This revised Policy incorporates changes to the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (CalNAGPRA), which were signed into law under AB 275 in September 2020 and became effective January 1, 2021.
The Policy reflects extensive input received from tribes, UC faculty and staff, and other key stakeholders.
The University is committed to the repatriation of Native American human remains and cultural items in accordance with the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), its accompanying regulations, and CalNAGPRA. The fundamental importance of facilitating the repatriation of Native American and Native Hawaiian human remains and cultural items undergirds the Policy.
UCR looks forward to implementation of this policy. UCR is committed to bringing the ancestors and their cultural items home.
